site specific chamber work for spatialized ensemble alto flute in G, clarinet in Bb, trumpet in Bb & flugelhorn, accordion, celesta, piano, vibraphone, crotales, viola, 2 violoncellos, double bass

proximity [in reflection] is a site specific piece for a spatialized chamber ensemble in the Phillip T. Young Recital Hall at the University of Victoria.  The musicians are separated into two groups:

  1. On stage: alto flute in G, celesta, piano, percussion [vibraphone], viola, double bass. 
  2. Second floor behind the audience, beside the recording booth: clarinet in Bb, trumpet in Bb & flugelhorn, accordion, 2 violoncellos.

  • The percussionist has a unique role to move off stage to crotale locations, as notated. The specific placement of the crotales will emphasize acoustic characteristics of the space.

Due to distance, lighting, and eye lines, the piece is performed with synchronized stopwatch/timecode.
